Following a career as a teacher,
I changed, from formally teaching children, to working
with them, and for them. I worked for a Manx Charity,
to introduce a range of much needed services for children
and families. These included full "Day
Nursery"
services, "After School" and "Holiday Care" for
school-age children. Residential Care was re-introduced,
which led to an Independence Resource for the 16+ age group
who did not have a sustainable family life. Contact and
Family Centres followed on. So, I spent the rest of my
working life developing and leading the work of the now
well-known Isle of Man Children's Centre.
In 1996 I was proud to be awarded
the M.B.E. for my "Services
to Young People in the Isle of Man".
Although new to the work of being a Commissioner, I am
not new to Committee work, management, planning and decision
making. I employed a large staff team, and with others
tried to have a vision for future development.
I decided to become a Peel Town Commissioner and put my
experiences in life to good use. I do appreciate being
elected and, after a steep learning curve, I hope there
will be something to show for my efforts.
