Ward library centenary
The Centenary Celebrations at the Ward Library had visitors from all over the Island and further afield. On Thursday 27th September, it was estimated that over 250 attended the re-opening day and this was surpassed on the Friday when over 270 people called in to see the various displays and photographs, but on Saturday 29th September over 600 people called in to see the refurbished Library and take part in this historic occasion for the Town and the Library.

Mr James Kewley Ward who presented the Library to the town of Peel, is owed an incredible debt of gratitude, and his vision has proved worthwhile.

As it was so busy, many visitors have asked if the display boards and photographs could be kept out for a longer period, and these will be available for viewing for several more weeks. If anyone wants copies of the information or any photographs please ask Carol at the Library.

More Centenary news can be found on the Library Website.

Civic Sunday Service
Mrs Sweeney's Civic Service held in St German's Cathedral on 22 July 2007 proved most succesful with the collection from the service raising £300 which Mrs Sweeney kindly donated to the Peel and District Anti-Cancer Association.

Poppy Appeal
The Commissioners recently received a letter from Nick Buckley, Head of the Poppy Appeal for the Royal British Legion. It was noted that the 2006 Appeal raised almost £26 million - an all time record.

The Legion will be undertaking a "Poppy Appeal" campaign to attract new volunteers to continue the good work done to raise funds to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who have served or are serving in the Armed Forces. The Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the Legion's many welfare and benevolent schemes in which over 300,000 people are helped each year.

Kerbside Recycling
On 17 September Mr Gimbert (Commissioner) and Mr Leadley (Town Clerk) attended a DOLGE presentation at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre to discuss kerbside recycling.

Enviros, the Department's consultants, made a presentation to all the Island's Local Authorities which was followed by a statement from Mr. John Shimmin, M.H.K., Minister of DOLGE. This was followed by a question and answer session.

The outcome of the research and work undertaken provided for a phased implementation approach :-
-Phase 1 Douglas, Onchan and Braddan
-Phase 2 Peel and Ramsey
-Phase 3 To offer where practically, environmentally and economically feasible a Kerbside Recycling Collection Service to all main centres of population and housing density on the Isle of Man by 2013

The Department's timescale included a roll out kerbside collection service to the phase 1 area by October 2008 with phase 2 scheduled for 2011. The costs of the scheme for the first three years will be centrally funded.

Bonfire Night - Monday, 5th November 2007

Tenancy Agreement and Pet Dogs
At a recent meeting of the Commissioners discussion took place over tenants that maintained pet dogs without prior Commissioners approval as required by the tenancy agreement.

Some concern has been voiced over dogs barking excessively and causing distress and nuisance to adjacent neighbours. Please note that all tenants must have the Commissioners approval before taking on a pet dog, cat or noisy or dangerous animal or bird. In no case shall fowl or poultry be kept at the premises.

Extension to Disc Parking
At the Commissioners Board Meeting held on 19th July 2007 some 40-50 residents attended the meeting over their concerns about the introduction of new disc parking provisions proposed by the Department of Transport in consultation with the Commissioners.

At the meeting Mrs Sweeney, Chairman, stated that the Department had agreed to temporarily delay the scheme due to future road work schemes that would cause a significant amount of disruption to traffic movement around the Town.

After considering a letter from a resident requesting a public meeting over the disc parking proposals it was agreed that a meeting be held on Thursday, 26th July 2007 at 7:30pm in the Corrin Hall, Derby Road, Peel. All residents and interested parties are welcome to attend.
