Photos of the month

Nobody envied the task of Chair of Commissioners, Ray Harmer, this year in judging our annual photo competition. As ever there has been a high standard of entries throughout the year. This year's winners all capture rare or special events in the town...

In April Tony Faragher captured a beautiful moment in an almost magical way, showing the castle just visible out of the mist, recapturing St Patrick's Isle as an island again in its own right. For this Tony is the deserved first prize (£50) winner.

In July Peel had two visits from the longship Draken Harald Hårfagre, once with broken mast, and again after visiting Liverpool for repair. Numerous photographers turned out to capture the event, but chosen as our second prize winner was this photograph of the boat entering Peel harbour by Lynn Chambers. Back in February the third prize winner Dave Thornley captured the beautiful northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, as the backdrop to Peel Castle. Northern Lights illuminate the Isle of Man (BBC)

This year our Facebook followers voted each month on their favourite photos of the month. The top three from each month are shown below, and it is from this shortlist that the winners were chosen.

Please submit your entries for next year's competition to photos@peelonline.net. We like topical, newsy, and humourous photos as well technically good or artistic photographs. Photos should be submitted within a month of being taken to increase chances of being shown here.
